Scholarships

Making a positive impact within the communities it serves is at the core of everything Haggen does and since 2010 Haggen Food and Pharmacy has been awarding college scholarships. Explore the various scholarships that Haggen contributes to and the scholarships Haggen established.

The Dave Dunning Memorial Scholarship

In 2022, Haggen Food & Pharmacy lost a valued co-worker and friend. David D. R. Dunning touched the lives of all who knew him during his decade-long tenure with the company. With an unwavering commitment to aiding others, Dave's infectious enthusiasm and boundless dedication were evident in every interaction.

His work ethic and commitment to helping others was unparalleled, consistently giving more than 100% and embracing challenges with a resounding "yes." Known as "Mr. Fix-It," Dave's expertise spanned every facet of the food and grocery industry and he remained a steadfast presence. Dave fostered deep connections with both office and store teams, as well as the vendor community. His energy, compassion, tenacity, smile, and innate ability to make the best of any situation will long be remembered by all who knew him.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Dave spent 37 cherished years alongside his devoted wife and partner. Together, with their beloved daughter, the Dunnings found solace in their Idaho Homestead, tending to the land to ensure future forest growth and a prosperous future.

Dave’s legacy will live on in future generations of “Mr. Fixits” who will receive training and certification in the HVAC field through the Dave Dunning Memorial Scholarship at Bellingham Technical College.

The LEe Reynolds Memorial Scholarship

The Lee Reynolds Memorial Scholarship of Whatcom Community Foundation was established by Haggen Food & Pharmacy in 2021. This scholarship supports undergraduate students who are currently enrolled at a university/community college/technical school who are passionate about agriculture and wish to further their education with a degree or career in the field of agriculture. Special consideration is given to students with financial need and applicants must live in or come from or attend a higher educational institution in the following Washington State counties where Haggen Food & Pharmacy stores are established: Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, Island, King, Thurston & Pierce.

In 2020, after 48 years of exemplary service with Haggen Food & Pharmacy, Lee Reynolds retired. To call Lee passionate would be a considerable understatement. Lee lived for sharing the finest fresh produce with guests, he loved being out on the farms with growers and the bonds he forged with countless professionals in his field is what made the Haggen produce department world class. Equally strong were the relationships that Lee developed with each of the Haggen produce teams and with his colleagues. Many thought of Lee as their mentor and found him by their side throughout their career, encouraging each to expand and grow their skills. The Lee Reynolds Memorial Scholarship will award $5,000 to two students from select counties in Western Washington who are passionate about agriculture and plan on pursuing a degree or career in the field of agriculture.

Hannah Dashiell Memorial Scholarship

Hannah Dashiell was a senior at Squalicum Highschool and worked part-time at Barkley Haggen. Hannah had a weighted GPA well over 4.0; she was her ASB class Vice President and she had just been accepted into the Urban Honors Program at Portland State University with plans of becoming a doctor. Tragically, Hannah’s life was cut short in January of 2014 when her car collided with another car in an icy commute to work.

The Hannah Dashiell Memorial Scholarship is awarded to Whatcom County female Highschool graduate with a 3.0GPA or higher who plans to attend any college to study health and medicine. Applications are open mid-January to mid- February.

Haggen is proud to honor Hannah’s legacy by making an annual contribution to the Hannah Dashiell Memorial Scholarship.

GBRC & Haggen Scholarship

Each year the GBRC Haggen to Haggen scholarship is awarded to two college bound seniors who demonstrate an enthusiasm for running now and into in the future!

Originally the scholarship was funded from the proceeds of the Haggen to Haggen 5k. This bygone fun-run was held from 1993 – 2019 and was a highly anticipated community event that Haggen and GBRC partnered together to produce.

Haggen Food & Pharmacy has made a firm commitment to sustainably fund two (2) $1,000 scholarships each year, as well as provide financial support for shoe vouchers intended for low-income high school athletes.
